Section A: Questions of Higher Consciousness, Enlightenment, and BEingThere.net

How do I pursue Higher Consciousness in everyday life: how do I remember; how do I remain conscious of my choices for growth and authenticity throughout the day, and during all my experiences and interactions?

What you ask is the very core of this website. There is no easy answer. Learning how to practice Higher Consciousness in everyday life is what everyone must learn. It is a life-long process of learning. As we practice the specific skills of consciousness, we get better at it. These skills begin, as they must, with emotional awareness and effectiveness.

There is much on this website to create a solid foundation for this life-long process. Since you are a member, you have access to all of it. Below, is a list of web pages that we recommend reading, in the order we think will make the most sense. Read, read, read.

In addition to reading about consciousness, we know that everyone must learn the emotional skills that allow them to make a consciousness lesson out of every moment. These skills are described in Feeling Your Way Along.

Also, participation in the forum discussions has an almost magical effect on growth. Through regular participation, members gain awareness of their experience, insight into the dynamics that create situations, and confidence in their ability to deal with these situations in their lives. We highly recommend that you participate in these discussions.

Of course, your issues will be raised there. The learning is most profound as you continue to engage, dealing with your issues as you proceed. Talk with other members about what they do, how they remember, what obstacles they encounter, and anything else that occurs to you. Of course, Donna and I, as well as the forum hosts, will jump in wherever we feel we might add some specific piece of relevant information. Open exploration helps everyone.

If a specific question about practicing consciousness in any given situation arises, let us know and we will try to write about it in a Consciousness Lesson.

(We recommend that you copy and paste these addresses onto a separate document, so you can return to the list after reading each page.)

Does personal growth into Higher Consciousness and Enlightenment require a teacher or a guide?

Enlightenment is everyone's birthright. By coming into this world, you have already entered the path to Enlightenment. But the path is long, arduous, obscure, obstacle-ridden and circuitous. There is so much to learn that you may not be able to learn everything in one lifetime.

This is why one of the key values in support of the pursuit of Higher Consciousness and Enlightenment is to strive for longevity. It takes a long life to allow for all of the lessons of Enlightenment to emerge.

Even then, without the right skills and directions, you are left having to fumble in vain hopes of finding what you came for. This is not to say it cannot be done. It is just much more difficult to insist on going it alone, than it is to learn from those who have gone ahead.

There are specific tools and skills to be learned from a teacher that point the way. There are skills that need to be learned on four different aspects. There are times you need a specific type of teacher, depending upon which aspect is your aspect of least development.

At different stages of growth you might need someone to teach you how to meditate, someone to teach you how to collect and channel your Qi, someone to help you clarify your thinking, or someone to help you tune-in to your inner truth. Masters exist in all of these areas who can significantly shorten the time needed to learn a lesson of Enlightenment.

Why would I need to buy something in order to realize Enlightenment? Shouldn't truth be given freely?

If you wanted to learn from a great master, you would need to provide support for that master. If you wanted to be accepted into a monastery of Enlightenment, you would need to offer sustenance to the keepers. If you wanted to be shown how to live and learn, you would be required to first give of yourself. These are the historical truths of seeking Enlightenment, and they remain equally true today.

This exchange of teaching and guidance for sustenance and offerings is a necessary part of the learning. The student learns that there is a cost for the privilege of learning. The teacher screens potential students for sincerity and readiness, refusing the gift of illumination for those who act from entitlement and laziness.

Since the teacher is also human, and must attend to his or her sustenance, any payment or offering from the student frees the teacher's time and effort from this necessity. You can think of it this way: you're not paying for the lessons in truth. Those are universal and free. What you pay for is the accessibility of the teacher. You pay for them BEing There!

There is a high level of self-responsibility required to pursue Higher Consciousness. Adequately meeting your own needs, and then having enough to help support those who can guide you, is one measure of self-responsibility. Resentment or rebelliousness to this truth is an indication of the work still to do before undertaking a journey of consciousness.

Asking a master or guide to carry you would indicate your lower-consciousness desire to be saved. Asking him or her to give away the wisdom gained from their lifetime pursuit is to deny its true value and show disrespect toward the master. If you have nothing to offer the teacher, then you are not ready to seek the greater lessons of Enlightenment. You would still be too focused on survival and other issues of lower consciousness.

One of the universal laws of spirituality is to "give to those who further your growth the most." Money is merely a way to establish a system of common value, making this exchange more convenient.

How long should I expect it to take to realize Enlightenment?

In his book, 365 Tao, Deng Ming-Dao says, "If all you want is spiritual realization, it isn't that difficult. For the average person, a dozen years under the guidance of a good teacher will probably give it to you. That's shorter than what it takes to be a good musician, athlete, or artist. It's even shorter than the time it will take to collect your pension. If you have the good fortune to study with the right person, you can succeed in a relatively short amount of time." (365 Tao: Daily Meditations by Deng Ming-Dao; ©1992 Deng Ming-Dao; Harper San Francisco, p.90)

We teach that you should never make your pursuit about the destination. Perfect the actual pursuit, and the results will naturally follow. As soon as you focus on the expected results, you will inevitably be confronted again with this lesson.

When do you become a violinist, for example? Becoming a violinist is about a lifelong process. The more you learn, and the more you practice what you learn, the easier you identify with that title. But like Higher Consciousness, as soon as you are seduced by the the pride of performing well, you lose your focus and are reminded that you can only claim being a perpetual student, never an accomplishment.

"Pursuit of Higher Consciousness" describes a process of BEing. "Realizing Enlightenment" only shows interest in the imagined goal. This is why we usually refer to the pursuit of Higher Consciousness and the skills required to do this well.

Focus only on the process. The results can only be appreciated in hindsight. If you are shown the lessons by a good teacher, and if you are sincere in your pursuit and diligent in your practice, you may recognize your Enlightenment. It may take a lifetime, maybe longer.

Is there anyone who is Enlightened?

We don't know. We have not met anyone we recognized as Enlightened. We're not sure we would recognize an Enlightened person. We don't really know what to look for. Anyone who presented himself to us as Enlightened would be met with our skepticism. Someone who met our preconceived notion of what Enlightenment would look like, would be appreciated as a cosmic joke; the universe providing us with our issue-driven fantasy. The problem with trying to define Enlightenment is that any definition we could understand, would necessarily be a limited view from a level of consciousness we have already realized.

If you have been reading Feeling Your Way Along, or received the Short Course in Enlightenment, then you have learned about levels of consciousness. We can speak about these from first-hand experience. We can report about our journey of learning lessons in consciousness, and how doing so allows us to see the next level of consciousness, and begin working on a whole new set of lessons. This process has become clear through thirty-five years of seeking our own truth, gradually acquiring the skills to do so over the years. We cannot yet describe that level of consciousness beyond what we realize in my life. We can only point to it, and call it by a common name, Enlightenment.

We have also observed the effects in our lives of realizing greater consciousness. One effect has been the gradual movement away from popular society. We have come to a point in our lives where we have little or no desire to "fit in", to be popular or even recognized. For many reasons, we want to reduce our contact with people who are not working on their issues. We take the time to explain this path to those who can demonstrate through their life, that they are ready to hear about it. It has been our experience that sincere seekers of Higher Consciousness do not proselytize. They have no need to convince others to seek a path for which they are not ready. We do offer information and guidance for anyone who is ready to begin the great journey.

We can extrapolate from this experience, that someone who has realized the level of consciousness that we refer to as Enlightenment will be even more invisible than we have been able to achieve thus far. In other words, an Enlightened person would only appear to be Enlightened to an observer if he or she wanted it that way. And they would only want it that way for some specific reason, probably not for ego recognition or acknowledgement.

In theory, we could all be surrounded by Enlightened people who simply do not reveal themselves. Or, we may be surrounded by morons. Who knows? Trying to answer the question of Enlightenment before preparing for this level of consciousness is moot. In our experience, those who refuse to begin the journey, because they remain unconvinced of the promised destination, are simply avoiding their work. Personal growth is an inherent characteristic in all living things. We either embrace the growth, and the growth pains that go with it, or we work toward death, unconsciously, and the futility that assuredly accompanies it. There is only one choice in life, to grow or to die.

The choice to die is usually not a conscious one. It usually is a reflection of someone's fear of living. The choice to live requires that one deals with their experience, and grows continuously, which means there is constant work. When one chooses to live, and embraces their inner work, then personal growth occurs. Eventually, one sees that there is a pattern to the work/growth, and that there are tangible skills to facilitate the work. As one acquires the skills, and masters them, there is a realization that their world has changed. We call this a new level of consciousness. Repeated cycles of growth allow for hindsight that makes the path obvious. Newly awake people, those who have made a conscious choice to live, wish for an obviousness to this path, which can only come later. The real test is whether you will undertake the journey simply because you know you must, without any promise of reward. The willingness to proceed, armed only with the calling for growth, is what we refer to as faith.

So, listen to the calling for growth. Choose life! Choose willingness to feel what you feel and willingness to deal with what you feel. This is the first choice of consciousness. Everything else you can learn. But, like seeds in the ground, the first choice must be made in the darkness.

Why are emotions emphasized in the pursuit of Higher Consciousness?

Emotions are the spontaneous expressions coming from your beliefs, values, perceptions or early life experience, most of which are imprinted in your unconscious. By learning to work with each emotion, you have access to parts of your unconscious that are usually out of sight. By testing each emotional source for its current veracity, you have the opportunity to update and claim responsibility for a revised Personal Truth, which then allows you to consciously choose your behavior to be consistent with your truth. Living in accordance with your Personal Truth, called BEing in Truth or BEing There, allows you to encounter necessary lessons for Higher Consciousness, lessons that otherwise remain unavailable. We call this the Path of Emotion. It is explained in depth in Feeling Your Way Along.

Is this counseling?

No. Counseling may or may not place emphasis on your emotions. If there is emphasis there, counseling often regards emotions as symptoms of a problem, which are then treated under the expectation that the client finds greater mental stability and emotional happiness. We regard happiness as just one of the myriad of emotions, all of which can lead someone to a greater Personal Truth, and eventually Higher Consciousness. Further, counseling must take into account a complete history of the client, to discover hidden causes for their current situation or problem. BTN does not have the ability to examine the history of its members, and thus cannot probe for mental illness, instability, unhealthy lifestyles, toxic environments or the tendency to hurt oneself or others. Both counseling and BTN have benefits for individual growth. We recommend to all of our members that they also develop a professional counseling relationship. To that end, we provide guidance for finding and selecting a professional counselor in the Short Course in Personal Growth, located in the Archive of Short Courses in the Library of Enlightenment. Non-members may receive this short course if they sign-up for it during a time when it is being offered.

Is it possible to train somebody to do self-counseling for self-awareness? Is an external counselor an absolute must? Can there not be a list of questions addressed to self?

There is so much imprinting in the unconscious that is out of our view, that it takes another person to help us to see those parts of ourselves. A counselor acts like a mirror, allowing us to see what we cannot see on our own, our blind spots. The better the counselor, the more we can see.

When left to our own exploration, our unconscious will inevitably steer the process away from all issues it regards as threatening to our survival. Thus, self-examination, while useful, is not thorough, and it never can be. There is training that must occur somewhere, sometime, that teaches us how to allow our emotions and how to explore our emotions, so we can access our truth.

The counselor does not need to be an actual counselor, but it must be someone who sees inner dynamics and reflects them back to us accurately. It must be someone who can confidently take us hand-in-hand to our most vulnerable experiences, and know what to do when we get there. Stephen and Donna BE actually train partners in a marriage to help each other in this way. At some point, however, everyone needs counseling or consciousness guidance, if for no other reason than to test the truth they have discovered within.

Meditation, vision quest, walk-about; these are all very useful tools. But they do not teach the seeker to recognize and reach within his own imprinting. Emotional tools are needed for this.

Nor is self-discovery a mental exercise. Self-questioning is useful if the seeker takes each question as an invitation to feel and explore. But again, our unconscious will subtly and inevitably steer us away from those issues that it perceives as dangerous. It must. That is the one and only job of the unconscious.

Even in the presence of a counselor, the seeker must continuously deal with the subtle invitations of the unconscious to deny and avoid. Only a good counselor or consciousness guide can see this and help the seeker come to greater awareness about these over-ruling dynamics.

Does BEing There offer Consciousness Counseling™?

At this time, Donna BE is still offering counseling. This is provided through face-to-face appointments in her office, in Grand Junction, Colorado, USA. For a very small number of long-distance clients who have earned the privilege after learning the skills needed to work on their issues between sessions, she will occasionally counsel via telephone or instant-messaging with video.

Other long-distance clients must incur transportation, lodging, food and incidental costs, as well as the standard hourly rates of counseling. In order to maximize the potential of each journey, appointments can be set for a number of hours, on several consecutive days. Call her office for further details. (Contact information)

How can I find a counselor in my area who provides Consciousness Counseling™?

Since Consciousness Counseling™ is proprietary, only a counselor who has been trained through BEing There Enlightenment Systems, Inc. may make this claim. For a list of counselors in your area who offer Consciousness Counseling™, you may contact the BEing There office.

There are other types of counselors, however, who may help you in your pursuit of Higher Consciousness. We believe that everyone needs to learn basic emotional skills as part of their pursuit of Higher Consciousness. Some counselors can teach you these skills, and some cannot. If you would like further information about how to search for and screen potential counselors, you may contact this office.

How can I become certified to do Consciousness Counseling™?

We have not yet had a large enough demand from counselors to warrant organization of a school. We can arrange individual contracts for counselors who have earned professional credentials elsewhere. If you would like information on how to receive training in Consciousness Counseling™, you may contact this office.

Section B: Questions of How to Use This Forum

Login and Registration Issues

Why can't I log in?
Have you registered? Seriously, you must register in order to log in. Have you been banned from the board? (A message will be displayed if you have.) If so, you should contact the webmaster or board administrator to find out why. If you have registered and are not banned and you still cannot log in then check and double-check your username and password. Usually this is the problem; if not, contact the board administrator -- they may have incorrect configuration settings for the board.

Why do I get logged off automatically (i.e. timed-out)?
If you do not check the Remember my login box when you log in, the board will only keep you logged in for a preset time. This prevents misuse of your account by anyone else. To stay logged in, check the box during login. This is not recommended, however, if you access the board from a shared computer, e.g. library, internet cafe, university cluster, etc.

If you allow the forum to sit idle for more than 2.7 hours, and you have not selected the "Remember my login" option, your log-in will be automatically timed-out. This means that whenever you try to work in the forum again, after being timed-out, it no longer remembers you and treats you like a guest.

One of the places this may show up is in the Create New Post window. It would now include a field for your username that is not there when your log-in is current. This creates confusion for some members who try to post after being timed-out. The forum would no longer let you use your username, nor will it allow you to use another username. If you were to leave it blank, it enters the post as a Guest.

If you do not choose the "Remember my login" option, it is good practice to not let the forum sit idle for more than about 2 1/2 hours. If you do, just close your browser and then re-open it to BEingThere.net. When you log-in again, the timer will refresh.

How do I change the "Remember my login" option?

First, log-out. Then re-enter a member area from the Lobby. The log-in window will show, and you can un-check the "Remember my log-in" option. To log-out, click the "Farewell" icon in the header of any member page, the waving hand. This will take you to "One Last Insight", and the "Log-out" link is at the bottom of the page.

How do I prevent my username from appearing in the online user listings?
In My Profile, you will find an option to Hide your online status; if you switch this on you'll only appear to board administrators or to yourself. You will be counted as a hidden user.

I've lost my password!
Don't panic! First, check for the e-mail you received confirming your registration. It included your username and password for future reference, like now. Second, your password can be retrieved. To do this go to the login page and click I've forgotten my password. Follow the instructions and you should be back online in no time.

I registered but cannot log in!
First check that you are entering the correct username and password. These are case sensitive, so make sure they are written in the case that applies. If they are okay then one of two things may have happened, both involving payment options: If you chose to pay off-line, then your membership will be delayed until your payment is received and has cleared your issuing bank. You will be notified by e-mail when your subscription is activated. Similarly, if an automatic payment was refused by your credit card company, then your subscription will be placed on hold until payment clears. You can contact the site administrator for further information.

I registered in the past but cannot log in anymore!
The most likely reasons for this are: you entered an incorrect username or password (check the email you were sent when you first registered), your subscription has expired, or the administrator has deleted your account for some reason. Contact the administrator after checking the accuracy of your username and password.

Where can I find my account information?

(for members of BEingThere.net)

Membership information is located in the "Members sub-menu" of the Membership menu, at the frontdesk in the Lobby.

From the Lobby view, place your cursor on "Membership". A pop-up menu will appear, from which you can select "Members Only". Click on My Profile for information about you and your user preferences, or My Billing Information for the status of your subscription or to renew.

You can also get to the My Profile page from the Membership Directory (Membership/Members Only/Membership Directory), and then clicking on the profile icon at the top of the page. This same icon is found on many of the forum pages.

You can then choose to edit your account or your profile by clicking on the link next to the item of interest in the My Profile page. You are protected from others seeing or altering this information, by your log-in information.

User Preferences and Settings

How do I change my settings?
All of your Registration Information, Profile Information, Preferences, and Avatar Control Panel can be changed by opening the My Profile page. You may access this page by clicking on My Profile from any one of a number of different access links:

1. In the Members sub-menu of the Membership menu at the frontdesk in the Lobby;

2. The profile icon at the top of any of the forum pages; or

3. The profile icon at the top of the Membership Directory.

To change your username, e-mail address or password, you will open another window, called Edit Profile, by clicking on "click here to change" next to any of these items in My Profile.

You can also check your membership status by clicking on "Click here to view and edit your subscription information" from My Profile.

The times are not correct!
The times are probably correct. What you may be seeing are times displayed in a time zone different from the one you are in. If this is the case, you should change your profile setting for the time zone to match your particular area, e.g. London, Paris, New York, Sydney, Bombay, Beijing, etc. All times are based on Greenwich Mean Time. Be sure to set your time zone in your user preferences. Remember to subtract hours from GMT when you live west of England, around to the International Date Line. Add hours to GMT for your time zone, when you live east of England, around to the date line.

I changed the time zone and the time is still wrong!
If you are sure you have set the time zone correctly and the time is still different, the most likely answer is daylight savings time (or summer time as it is known in the UK and other places). The board is not designed to handle the changeovers between standard and daylight time, so during summer months the time may be an hour different from the real local time.

How do I show an image below my username?
You may install an image, known as an avatar, that will show below your username in your posts. We advocate that every member use an avatar to personalize the interaction on the forum. You may receive assistance installing an avatar, if desired. For instructions on how to include an avatar, go to this page.

Posting Issues

How do I post a topic in a forum?
Enter a forum topic from the Lobby. Bring up the menu for an area by placing your cursor on it. Click on the topic to open that forum. Click on "PostReply" at the top or bottom of the page, or click on the text balloon icon in the header. Any of these options will open a "Post a reply" window, where you write and format your post. Then click "Preview" to test its appearance, or "Submit" to post your reply.

How do I edit or delete a post?
You can only edit or delete your own posts. You can edit a post by clicking the edit button for the relevant post. Please note that you cannot delete a post once someone has replied.

I can't find a previous post!

First, make sure you are in the topic where that post is located. There are many topics occurring simultaneously. Second, a lengthy topic will have many pages. Be sure to check on other pages for the post you are looking for. It should be in sequence, based on the date and time it was submitted. If you limited the span of time you wish to show in your topic, you may find a lost post by expanding the length of inclusion of your search. You can also sort the posts in a topic by oldest or newest first, to help you find one. Third, if the post you are looking for violates the Terms of Service or the Privacy Policy, it may have been deleted by a Host or Administrator.

How do I save a post as a draft and come back later?

Unfortunately it is not possible. If necessary, I'd suggest copying the text and pasting it into a word document which can be saved, edited and reinserted in a forum post reply.

How do I add a signature to my post?
To add a signature to a post you must first create one; this is done via your profile. Once created you can check the Add Signature box on the posting form to add your signature. You can also add a signature by default to all your posts by checking the appropriate radio box in your profile. You can still prevent a signature being added to individual posts by un-checking the add signature box on the posting form.

How do I create a poll?
Creating a poll is easy! When you create a new topic (as in the MID Hall), you should see an Add Poll form below the main posting box. You should enter a title for the poll and then at least two options -- to set an option type in the poll question and click the Add option button. You can also set a time limit for the poll, 0 being an infinite amount. There will be a limit to the number of options you can list, which is set by the board administrator.

How do I edit or delete a poll?
As with posts, polls can only be edited by the original poster, a moderator, or board administrator. To edit a poll, click the first post in the topic, which always has the poll associated with it. If no one has cast a vote then users can delete the poll or edit any poll option. However, if people have already placed votes only moderators or administrators can edit or delete it; this is to prevent people rigging polls by changing options mid-way through a poll.

Why can't I vote in polls?
Only registered users can vote in polls so as to prevent spoofing of results. If you have registered and still cannot vote then you probably do not have appropriate access rights.

Formatting and Topic Types

What is BBCode?
BBCode is a special implementation of HTML. You can also disable it on a per post basis from the posting form. BBCode itself is similar in style to HTML: tags are enclosed in square braces [ and ] rather than < and > and it offers greater control over what and how something is displayed. For more information on BBCode see the guide which can be accessed from the posting page.

Can I use HTML?
Yes, but you will probably find only certain tags work. This is a safety feature to prevent people from abusing the board by using tags which may destroy the layout or cause other problems. If HTML is enabled you can disable it on a per post basis from the posting form.

What are Smileys?
Smileys, or Emoticons, are small graphical images which can be used to express some feeling using a short code, e.g. :) means happy, :( means sad. The full list of emoticons can be seen via the posting form. Try not to overuse smileys, though, as they can quickly render a post unreadable and a host may decide to edit them out or remove the post altogether.

Can I post Images?
Images can indeed be shown in your posts. However, there is no facility at present for uploading images directly to this board. Therefore you must link to an image stored on a publicly accessible web server, e.g. http://www.some-unknown-place.net/my-picture.gif. You cannot link to pictures stored on your own PC (unless it is a publicly accessible server) nor to images stored behind authentication mechanisms such as Hotmail or Yahoo mailboxes, password-protected sites, etc. To display the image use either the BBCode [img] tag or appropriate HTML (if allowed).

What are Announcements?
Announcements often contain important information and you should read them as soon as possible. Announcements appear at the top of every page in the forum to which they are posted.

What are Sticky topics?
Sticky topics appear below any announcements in any forum and only on the first page. They are often quite important so you should read them where possible.

How do I use the spell checker?

(This feature is not yet installed. Until it is, there is no spell checker. Put to use your many years of education, along with a good dictionary. Good luck!)

How do I use the formatting codes in the reply window?

The 9 buttons at the top of the "Post a reply" window offer you various options for "spicing-up" your post. I'll cover each of these.

First, notice that when you put your cursor over one of these buttons, a very short description and example of how to use the option appears just above the text window where you type your message.

A basic rule for most programming code to function, is that a command must be turned on and turned off. If you have one without the other, it won't work. Each command, either on or off is referred to as a "Tag". This is an important word to remember, as I will use it throughout this message. Think of each tag like a bookend: If you have a row of books on a shelf, they will fall over unless you have a bookend on both sides.

In this environment, a tag is encapsulated in brackets that look like this []. These brackets tell the program to treat this as a command, not just text.

An opening, or "turn on" tag has an opening bracket, the command inside of it, and a closing bracket. It looks like this: [command]

A closing, or "turn off" tag has a forward slash in front of the command. It looks like this: [/command]

In use, my sentence might look something like this:
[whatever command] This text would be effected by the command.[/whatever command] I have my left "bookend", my books in the middle and my supporting right "bookend".

OK, now that you have a basic understanding of the theory, let's look at each of the 9 tags (from left to right) and what they do.

B- means bold. If I click the B it places a "turn bold on" tag in my message. Now this text will be bold until I click the B again and insert a "turn bold off" tag. You'll notice that the command button has an asterisk (*) on it when it is open, and the asterisk goes away after I close the tag.

i- means italic text. Italic text is slanted slightly like this.

u- means underline. I can emphasize my text by underlining it. I also use the underline in conjunction with the URL tag, which we'll get to in a minute, so readers know what text in my message is actually a link.

Quote- Inserts the words "Quote:" and changes the look of the text so it stands out. I used this to quote Robin who was asking what all these buttons mean that I'm talking about now. For example I could say:

An old aviation adage says,

Quote:
It's better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air, than to be in the air wishing you were on the ground.

Code- This tag tells the computer to ignore any code within this tag that it might otherwise try to interpret as a command. For example, I could say "Hey, Geek, check out this great code for automatically redirecting people to my website!
Code:
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript"><!--
function redirect () { setTimeout("go_now()",0); }
function go_now ()   { window.location.href = "http://www.ElegantWebsiteDesign.com"; }
//--></SCRIPT>

Now we get a little more complex, because these tags require extra input, as opposed to just an "open" and "close" tag:

List- creates an "un-ordered" list, like a bullet point list. After inserting the List tag, I can include an Asterisk tag before each item that I want to have a bullet point in front of it. It looks like this [*]. This is one rare occasion that I don't have to use a "turn off" tag. I could say:

Be sure you don't forget these items for the camping trip!
  • Boots
  • Backpack
  • Flashlight

The code looks like this:
Code:
[list][*]Boots[*]Backpack[*]Flashlight[/list]

List= creates an ordered list, like an "a, b, c" or "1, 2, 3" list. I have to tell the tag what "value" I want the list to have by inserting either the number 1 or letter "a" after the equals sign. If I want this to be a numbered list I'll put in list=1, and then the [*] tag in front of each item I want to be included.
  1. first thing
  2. second thing
  3. third thing

If I want to create an "a, b, c" list, I'll do list=a, and an asterisk tag in front of each item I want to be included, like this:

  1. The A item
  2. The B item
  3. The C item

Img- is for inserting an image. To do this, the image must be online and have an absolute URL. It can not simply be from your computer!

Here's a picture of me ridge soaring from my paragliding website:

The code (with internet url) looked like this:
Code:
[img]http://andrewsentme.com/paragliding/images/btn-img-example.jpg[/img]

URL- allows you to place a link in your message. You can either insert a full URL, like this http://AndrewSentMe.com/paragliding or you can link text by adding a value to the opening URL tag by adding URL=your url. I could say Click here to visit my website! Remember, I said I use the underline tag to show that I've linked the text? That's what I've done here. By using the underline tag inside the URL tag it underlined my text link, making it look more like a link rather than plain text.

The code for these examples looks like this:
Code:

First link:
[url]http://AndrewSentMe.com/paragliding[/url]
Second link:
[url=http://andrewsentme.com/paragliding][u]Click here to visit my website![/u][/url]

Font color is pretty simple. It changes the color of the text. I usually do this by highlighting the text I want to change and then changing the color. Doing it this way automatically inserts a "turn on" and "turn off" tag. If you do it without highlighting the text, be sure you put the text that you want to color inside the "bookends"

Font size works just the same. However you're not limited to the normal, large, etc. sizes that the drop-down list has. You can simply adjust the number value of the size=x tag to customize the size. The larger the number, the larger the text. This is size 14 text.

The "Close Tags" link is useful if you see a tag in your actually message, like [b] without the "turn off" tag. This link will automatically close every tag. It's your friend!

If you've read this whole message, congratulations! You know more about programming code (say "P-code" if you want to sound like you know your stuff) than most of the population. These same concepts apply to all computer code.

If you forget how to do something and don't want to read through this whole list again, simply click the link on the bottom left-hand side of the "Post a reply" window that says "BBCode is ON". That will bring up a window with a list of these functions.

Go ahead, spice things up! Wink

How do I get formatting tags around the appropriate text?

I'm not sure why it wants to send tags to the end of the post, instead of where the cursor is.

The best way I've found to deal with this is to highlight the text you want to stylize and then set the properties you want.

With that last sentence, I wrote the sentence and highlighted it with my cursor. Then I changed the color, highlighted it again and clicked the italic button. This ensures the tags are placed correctly.

Certain properties used in conjunction with each other must be used in a certain order. For instance, if I want to underline a text link like this,

Elegant Website Design

I must use the underline tag inside the url tag. If I place the underline tags outside the url tags it won't work. The code looks like this:

Code:
[url=http://www.elegantwebsitedesign.com][u]Elegant Website Design[/u][/url]

User Levels

What are Administrators?
Administrators are people assigned the highest level of control over the entire board. These people can control all facets of board operation which include setting permissions, banning users, creating hosts, etc. They also have full moderator capabilities in all the forums.

What are Forum Hosts?
Hosts are individuals whose job it is to look after the running of the forums from day to day. They have the power to edit or delete posts and lock, unlock, move, delete and split topics in the forum they oversee. Generally hosts are there to help members find their way around, answer questions, help resolve problems, and to prevent people from going off-topic or posting abusive or offensive material.

Whom do I contact about abuse and/or legal matters related to this board?
The Forum Host may be able to mediate an abuse problem. You may send a Private Message to the Forum Host by clicking on the icon in the header of each forum page. You can also look for the Host of a specific forum by locating their title under their name in a post, or in the Membership Directory. Legal matters should be reported to the Administrator. See Contact Us for information.

Private Messaging

I cannot send private messages!
The board administrator may have disabled private messaging for the entire board, or the board administrator has prevented you individually from sending messages. If it is the latter case you should try asking the administrator why.

I keep getting unwanted private messages!
In the future we will be adding an ignore list to the private messaging system. For now, though, if you keep receiving unwanted private messages from someone, inform the board administrator -- they have the power to prevent a user from sending private messages at all.

I have received a spamming or abusive email from someone on this board!
We are sorry to hear that. The email form feature of this board includes safeguards to try to track users who send such posts. You should email the board administrator with a full copy of the email you received and it is very important this include the headers (these list details of the user that sent the email). They can then take action.
